1860's Nouvel Atlas Classique
This French language atlas, published in 1864 with portions updated up to 1870, includes the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Much attention is paid to French history and colonies as it is a French School atlas from the period. I do not have a lot of information on the cartographer, L. Vat, beyond some references in old library catalogs.
These atlases come on the market occasionally, and are very nicely done. Of particular interest is the feature whereby the verso (reverse side) is a featureless copy of the same map. This, evidently, as a teaching aid for the classroom. I have reproduced both recto and verso of all sheets.
